About the event

🎉 Successful application for an international ZIM project! 🎉

As part of the ZIM network ISKNET, we have made it: Together with CampusGenius GmbH, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Sheffield (UK) and TUBR LTD (UK), we were able to submit an innovative project in the third ZIM-UK call and receive funding for it! 🚀

The "Intelligent Networks for Time Critical Manufacturing" project aims to develop an intelligent 5G campus network for manufacturing. Based on edge computing and artificial intelligence, the aim is to create a private network that prioritises the machines that are currently active in the production hall without delay. Thanks to AI predictions, the network adapts dynamically and thus supports efficient and responsive production. 🤖⚙️

The successful submission is the result of a co-operation between the project sponsors VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH, AiF Projekt GmbH (coordinator) and Innovate UK. Many thanks to all project agencies for their confidence in this forward-looking project!

TUBR brings extensive expertise in machine learning, big data and data prediction. Their models combine machine learning with physical models and use time series data to accurately reconstruct the underlying system. This approach has two decisive advantages: The models can be trained more quickly because the equations are already predetermined, and they achieve higher accuracy. This means that even complex and non-periodic data can be taken into account, which also better reflects the chaotic aspects of the system.

The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) specialises in advanced manufacturing and materials research with practical industrial applications. With almost 100 industrial partners, including Boeing, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and Airbus, it offers both one-off projects and long-term collaborations. Since its foundation in 2001 and its establishment at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire in 2003, the AMRC has grown significantly. The 5G Factory of the Future Testbed researches advanced technologies, OpenRAN, hybrid networks, high performance software and hardware, real manufacturing cases and develops 5G devices. The AMRC is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and employs over 500 researchers worldwide at sites in South Yorkshire, Preston and Broughton.

CampusGenius focusses on the provision of state-of-the-art private 5G mobile communication networks in various industries, including manufacturing, logistics and healthcare. They develop 3GPP standard-compliant software components for 5G communication networks, driving digitalisation in various vertical industries. Their own 5G campus network core, a fully virtualised, highly modularisable 5G SA core (including monitoring platform and management functions), supports both on-premise and cloud-hosted systems and ensures comprehensive and scalable connectivity solutions. Its expertise is focused on the development of 5G cores, network architectures, softwaretisation, cloudification and deployment.

The University of Duisburg-Essen with its Chair of Software Engineering focuses on technologies that drive digital transformation. Their research looks at the impact of these advances on business models, customer and partner expectations. Their aim is to understand the practical implications for organisations and individuals and to provide technical and expert support. Their expertise spans several innovative areas: 5G networks (part of the 5G.NRW competence centre); augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), blockchain, cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence. In close cooperation with the companies, the chair creates comprehensive concepts and takes care of everything from requirements engineering, specifications and software architectures to the mobilisation of existing application landscapes.
